Rob: Well, it's often said, 'to know where you're going, you need to know where you've been,' and for Oklahoma's Farming Heritage Association that's exactly what they hope to do for today's young people. We caught up with the group's organizer, Gary Perry, as they were demonstrating the old way of farming to students at Oklahoma's History Center. Gary Perry: We're having a tractor show for the intercity kids of Oklahoma City. It's the fourth grade class which is three thousand one hundred and eighty-five students there about. The kids are getting just a touch of Oklahoma history. The fourth grade class actually starts learning Oklahoma history in the fourth grade class, that's the reason they decided to bring them out today. Every once in a while you'll get that individual child that you'll see that light come on in their eyes like, oh, I get it, I understand why they did that, or how they bale hay, I understand where that comes from and why they do it. They don't know that cotton has seeds in it. You give them a cottonseed; a cottonseed is actually interesting to a child. You wouldn't think about a cottonseed really holding their attention, but they love anything they can get their hands on. You give them corn. One little kid asked, is this corn real or is this something that's fake? Well, they don't know. We're hoping that they'll take a little bit away that they will remember, because most of these children will never see this again. And, hopefully, you know maybe we'll gain two or three kids out of this group that wants to get into a tractor club and help preserve this part of our history that is dying. Male voice: This is what they used before electric drills and all that. Gary: We're out here because we love kids and we love to see that light come on in their eyes. There's not a person out here that it hasn't cost several hundred dollars just to be here and we're not getting a thing out of this, except right here. We're getting this, you know. We love to do it, that's the reason we're here. Rob: Now if you'd like to see more of this group's past work with students, you can see a web only feature as they gift an old tractor to be restored by an Oklahoma FFA chapter.
